A 138 sqm Family Home

BeforeAfter

Weihai, China

A calm and functional home designed around everyday family life.

This 138 sqm residence was designed for a family of four with two children, with the entire interior planned from the ground up around the family’s everyday needs.

Rather than treating the home as a collection of individual rooms, the design focuses on creating a cohesive living environment — balancing openness and privacy, storage and simplicity, functionality and warmth.

The result is a calm, contemporary home that feels considered without becoming overly formal.

The Brief

Designing for real life

Starting from a blank canvas, the design was developed around the everyday needs of a family of four.

With two children and three bedrooms, the home needed to balance shared family spaces with private areas, while providing generous storage and a clear, comfortable flow throughout the interior.

The brief focused on three key priorities:

01 — Better spatial organisation
Create clearer relationships between the main living areas and improve the overall flow of the home.

02 — Integrated storage
Introduce generous storage while keeping the visual language clean and uncluttered.

03 — A calm, family-oriented atmosphere
Use a restrained palette of light neutrals, natural wood and subtle textures to create a home that feels warm, comfortable and easy to live in.

Spatial Planning

Reworking the apartment around how the family lives

The design began with the existing floor plan rather than with decorative elements.

The layout was reconsidered from the perspective of daily movement, storage and family interaction.

Living, dining and circulation areas were visually connected to create a more coherent shared space, while the private rooms remain clearly separated from the main activity areas.

Built-in cabinetry is integrated into the architecture wherever possible, allowing storage to become part of the overall composition rather than appearing as an afterthought.

The result is a home where functional elements are deliberately designed into the space.
